Ulysses S. Grant is elected president, the electric light bulb makes its first appearance as a gleam in Edison’s eye and Pacific Nurseries opens for business in San Francisco. 1869. Quite a year. What began originally as a tiny retail nursery has now been around for more than 135 years. Pacific Nurseries, the oldest operating wholesale nursery in California, relocated in 1911, to Colma where it could better serve the south bay area. Under the leadership of Henry Von Kempf the business flourished and soon became one of the top suppliers of landscape plant material. Following World War II, Henry passed the mantle to his son, Paul Von Kemp, who expanded the business to cover the entire Bay Area. The 1960’s demanded flower power and to address that need a supplemental 8-acre growing ground was established in Mountain View. Lou, Don, and Dean Schenone teamed up with Anthony Tarlock and Ed Levesconte to assume ownership of the nursery in the 1970’s. After two decades of operation they passed the torch to the current owners: Don and Julie Baldocchi. Don, a fourth generation Californian combines 15 years Landscape contracting experience with a degree in Environmental Horticultural from the University of California at Davis; and Julie brings her acute business sense which was honed during the 15 years she owned and operated a successful commercial photography studio. The Baldocchi’s have spent the last 10 years reworking the nursery and grounds and the nursery has never looked better.
